Barnet

An upmarket enclave in north-west Edgware, squeezed between the A5 and the A41 near the foot of Brockley Hill. The name may refer to land newly brought into agricultural use, perhaps in the early sixteenth century. Newlands consists of just a handful of residential streets, accessed from Brockley Hill. Along and off Pipers Green Lane some of the newer properties boast distinctive designs and substantial proportions, and one group shows satisfying use of weatherboarding. The lane continues as a wooded footpath (see picture below) beside Edgwarebury golf course. The surrounding land belongs to All Souls College, Oxford – as it has done for centuries. The sports ground south of Brockley Avenue has been suggested as the site for Barnet FC’s new stadium, but is more likely to become playing fields for Edgware School. Roman cremation burials were found in 1953 at Pipers Green Lane.
