Hidden London takes a look at a variety of the capital’s minor districts and localities, some in the outer boroughs and some tucked away in lesser-known corners of the city centre – focusing mainly on the ways in which they’ve developed and highlighting any special points of interest. The site also features specially recommended places, a selection of London books, links to other useful websites and the occasional opinion (or opinionated) column.

If you know London well, you’ll already be familiar with many of the places featured here – but there should still be some you’ve never even heard of. Most of the content of this site comprises extracts from the London Gazetteer, which includes all the capital’s quarters, whether hidden or renowned, and is published by Chambers.
Chambers London Gazetteer
With fewer than 300 localities listed, Hidden London can only hint at what’s out there away from the tracks made by visitors to the capital – and by most of its residents. For the full story of a thousand more places, click here to order Chambers London Gazetteer via Amazon – for under £10 – plus postage.

Now in its sixth year of existence, Hidden London was thoroughly revised in 2009–10, with updated information on several pages and new sections added to the navigation bar featuring selected extracts from Brewer’s Dictionary of London Phrase & Fable, with some additional photographs. The most recent additions to the site have been illustrated articles on Monks Orchard, Hoxton and Hanover Square.
